Why should I support small business?

Updated: Jun 23

Have you ever considered how making a purchase and supporting a small business can have a major positive impact on your community?

Whether we acknowledge it or not, small businesses play a crucial role in our communities; they are often responsible for creating jobs, driving economic growth, and fostering a unique and diverse local culture. By supporting small businesses, we do not only help others succeed but also, create a thriving economy and enrich our local communities.

Graphic of a smiley face with text that wraps around it that reads 'support small business.'

Here are some of the key benefits and reasons why to support a small business:

Stimulates local economy & creates jobs:

By supporting a small business, you’re also supporting the local community. Spending your money at a local shop helps to stimulate the local economy and helps to keep business booming within your local regions. Small businesses also create and sustain jobs in your local community and by supporting small businesses, you help create job opportunities for your neighbors, friends, and family members.

Did you know? As of 2023, there are 33.2 million small businesses in the United States. And according to the Small Business Administration, small businesses account for 44% of the US economic activity; which also states that "small businesses are the lifeblood of the US economy."

Sustains local culture:

Small businesses are often unique; they have been known to be the collective creative consciousness of a community. Small businesses typically offer products and services that you won’t find at big box/ corporate stores. Small businesses significantly contribute to the identities of local communities. By supporting small businesses, you are helping to maintain and foster the local culture, ensuring that it remains vibrant, diverse and alive.

Supports entrepreneurship & dreams:

When you support a small business, you support the dreams of others (what is better than supporting your friends and family?). And when small businesses succeed, they can serve as an inspiration to other aspiring entrepreneurs, helping to create a thriving ecosystem within communities.

Community & better customer service:

Small businesses often have a close relationship with their customers and are deeply rooted in their communities. By supporting small businesses, you are helping to build a stronger, more connected community.

Small businesses often place a greater emphasis on customer service, as their reputation and success depend on it.

There’s no secret to it, corporations are all about your money. They typically only care about making a profit so they can get richer and pay their shareholders a fat return on their investment. A small business is so much more than that. As a result, you are likely to receive a higher level of customer service when you support small businesses as small business owners typically strive to go above and beyond for their customers/clients.

Helps the environment:

Small businesses often operate on a smaller scale, and therefore, have a smaller environmental impact. By supporting small businesses, you can help reduce the overall impact of commercial activity on the environment.

So please, we ask you - the next time you shop, consider shopping locally and supporting small business, because shopping at small businesses helps our communities thrive.
